System requirements for installing and running ELAN:

System (hardware):

  • 256 Mb RAM minimum, preferably 512 Mb or more (available for ELAN)
  • 1.5 Ghz. or faster processor (CPU)
  • 32-bit or 64-bit system (on Windows ELAN will run in 32-bit mode)

ELAN is available for three operating systems. It is written in the Java programming language and it relies on platform specific media frameworks for media playback.

Windows requirements and specifics:

  • Windows 7 or higher
  • the ELAN distributions include a Java Runtime Environment (currently version 1.7)
  • ELAN uses DirectShow (for most media formats) and Microsoft Media Foundation (mainly for mp4 files).
QuickTime player in ELAN on Windows is no longer supported.
It is possible to also use the QuickTime player (e.g. for .mov files) but additional conditions have to be met:

    • QuickTime player has to be installed before ELAN is installed
    • QuickTime should be installed as a Custom installation: the legacy feature QuickTime for Java should be installed as well (read more)
    • then ELAN should be (re-)installed

Mac OS X requirements and specifics:

  • Mac OS X 10.6 or higher
  • requires Apple’s Java 1.6; this will be downloaded and installed (requiring some user interaction) the first time ELAN is launched
  • media player based on QTKit, the framework underlying QuickTime 7. MPEG-2 support is not built-in

Linux requirements and specifics:

  • probably any distribution capable of running Java 1.6 desktop applications
  • the user should install a Java Runtime Environment separately beforehand, at least version 1.6 but probably better the latest stable version
  • ELAN tries to use the VLC player, if installed. More detailed information is included in the ELAN distribution and in the manual. Alternatively JMF (Java Media Framework) will be used

Installation of the MS Arial Unicode font (optional for all platforms)
