MySQL is a relational database system (RDBMS) that runs as a server providing multi-user access to several databases. All major programming languages include libraries to access MySQL. It comes with a command line tool, with many third party graphical user interfaces also available. Although not considered a full enterprise RDBMS like Oracle or PostgreSQL, it supports most RDBMS technologies like foreign keys, triggers, views, indexing, and backup. MySQL is easy to use, sufficient for most environmental data management applications and the choice of many web server hosting companies.
TLA-team: A freely available relational database system that can be used to store and retrieve all kinds of structured data. Some peope also use it for linguistics tasks such as storing lexica and annotations. In that case mySQL is used as a big container which covers all sorts of data in encapsulated form, i.e. any function to be carried out on the data is dependent on the availablity of the mySQL code and on additional code on top of the relationla database. This is the reason why we believe that the system has severe drawbacks as container for data, however it could be used due to efficient query mechanisms for storing indexes etc.
