Hello Han

I am part of a team working on the BSL Corpus, using ELAN 5.3.

Today, we performed an update of our ECV, tier types and tiers and all seems to have gone smoothly.

However, based on the release notes for 5.4, we understand that there is an issue in this area in 5.3 since 5.4’s release notes include ‘fixed a problem with (not) updating the list of CV entries after a change of the CV for a tier type (in case of an ECV)’

Could you explain the nature of the problem that is fixed in 5.4, so that we can understand whether we are likely to have encountered it in our recent update? We have spot-checked a few files and all seems good, but with several hundred EAFs in our corpus, we can’t easily check them all.

(We will upgrade to 5.4 in due course, but this will take some time as we have to co-ordinate it across our department.)

thank you
Heidi

Hello Heidi,

That problem concerned the CV entries list in the user interface, e.g. when double clicking an annotation in the Timeline viewer, the list would be empty or would show the entries of the CV before the change applied to the tier type. The file had to be closed and opened again. So, it is about a file opened in (the user interface of) ELAN, it is not related to your workflow.

I realize the description in the release notes is a bit unclear, I’ll update it.

Thanks Han – that’s very reassuring.

Lee here from the ASL SignBank corpus project here looking for the answer to this same question – thank you Heidi and Han! So, my understanding is that this is completely a UI-related fix made related to ECVs in ELAN 5.3 -> 5.4 (for mac), correct, and only pertains to files open at the moment of the update? Or are there broader implications for ECV-using tiers in this ELAN update? Thanks again.

Yes, strictly UI and current open document!
