Cannot change tier type of a tier from a transcription merge

Hi, so here’s what I have going on.

I have a video with a transcription and translation that were done in youtube. I downloaded the transcription and translation SRT files from youtube and converted them to csv files.

I successfully imported the transcription into the ELAN file and it aligns to the video. However I am having trouble importing the translation as well.

I go to import CSV, which creates a new eaf file with a tier that contains the translation. I then use Merge transcriptions to get that tier into a new eaf file with the transcription. I can do all of that just fine, but I cannot change anything about the newly imported tier, I can’t make it a child of the transcription tier. I cannot do that, because I cannot change the tier type to a tier type that has the stereotype set to ‘symbolic association’. ELAN will only let me change its type to one that has the stereotype set to “none”

Please let me know how I can make a tier that came from ‘merge transcriptions’ a child of another tier.

thank you

I realized I posted this in the wrong forum, please move to the ELAN forum. Sorry for the hassle.

After merging the two file you can do Tier->Copy Tier… (or Tier>Change Parent of Tier… which doe more or less the same), select the translation tier as the source and the transcription tier as the new parent. Select a “Symbolic Association” tier type in the third step.

I’m not sure if this thread can be moved (I’ll have to ask), but you’re free to post this again on the ELAN forum.

That worked! Thank you!
