I have transcribed an audio file using the CHAT format and saved it as a .cha file in CLAN. We would like to look at pronunciation errors and hence have used the code *p:w. However CLAN is marking the asterix as an illegal character. Considering many of the codes used in CHAT contain an asterix, why is this being marked as an illegal character when we run checks on the transcript?
Any advice would be really appreciated!

I’m sorry, I cannot help you, but we here at TLA are not really experts on CLAN and how to use it. It looks like one of the CHILDES mailing lists (http://talkbank.org/share/email.html) would be a better place to ask about this. Probably the chibolts one.
