I have tried to open ELAN version 5.1 with OS High Sierrra 10.13.3 and it does not open. When I click on the ELAN icon to open the programme, it appears in the icon panel at the bottom momentarily as if it is opening. And then it just disappears without opening. I am running Java version 8 update 151. Do you know what the problem might be? Best. Peter.

Not sure if this is it, but we had reports of crashes in case in an older version of ELAN keyboard shortcuts were changed and saved.
If there is a shortcuts1.pfsx file in the ELAN data folder, you could move it somewhere else and try to launch ELAN again.

ELAN on Mac still needs Java 6, I assume you have that version installed as well?

Thanks for your reply Han. Sadly that hasn’t worked and the problem still persists. I have Java 6 installed as well.

Having just read the previous posts and Java information on the website it seems that the Mac cannot run 2 versions of Java or have the option of selecting a previous version. Will ELAN be updated to run on the current version of Java?

In my experience it is not a problem to have different Java versions installed on a Mac (this concerns macOS 10.13.2 and earlier, still have to update to 10.13.3).
The main problem of updating ELAN to a more recent Java version is the embedding of a native video player; in versions greater than Java 6 this doesn’t seem to be possible anymore the way it was in Java 6 and earlier. We are working on a alternative solution, but it is not clear yet if that can perform well enough nor, if so, when that will be available in ELAN. There is, by the way, a Java 8 based version of ELAN, labelled ELAN 5.0 with JavaFX player on the downloads page. The media player in that version is one that comes with JavaFX.

So, is the mentioned ELAN data folder there and are there any log files in that folder named elan_x.log? If so, if you open the one that was modified most recently in a text editor, are there useful error messages in there (produced by ELAN 5.1)?
