ELAN performance on mac

Whenever I use the segmentation mode in ELAN the movie seems to stutter - sometimes even the sounds completely dissappears. I’m using ELAN for mac 5.0 on mov files. However, when I run the same files on ubuntu the problem dissappears. I have experienced this problem on both my macbook pro (i7 with 16 gb ram and AMD Radeon R9 M370X graphics card) and on my iMac (i5, 8gb ram and nvidia gtx775m graphics). Any idea what could be causing this?

Does this stuttering exclusively occur in the Segmentation mode or is it more general and does it occur in e.g. Annotation mode as well? And does it matter if you are actually doing something in the Segmentation mode, or does the movie stutter even if you are doing nothing?

These questions are another way of saying that I have no idea. The specs of the Macs shouldn’t be the problem.

Hi Han,

Okay, so I was just wondering whether other people had experienced the same issues. I certainly don’t expect the specs to be a problem, but does ELAN favor one video format over another for particular platforms?

I also just noticed it also in the annotation mode. It happens when I just play back the video file, both when marking smaller segment and when I just let it play over the full length.

Hi Lars,

Yes, it would be good to know if other people have run into the same problem, hopefully they will report it here.

ELAN does not favor any particular video format: ELAN just passes the media files to a media player framework(s) available on the platform. On MacOS the player is based on QuickTime (probably via a Cocoa QTKit layer), on Ubuntu it is probably a VLC/VLCJ player. .mov files should be no problem on the Mac, in principle (it is a container format that can contain all sorts of media streams).
Did you try other formats as well, just to compare?
