Elan, PRAAT, background noise measurement?

Hello, anyone who knows how we can measure background noise level of 1,5- minute spontaneous speech recordings already segmented in Elan. I use Elan, Audacity and Praat in order to analyse spontaneous speech samples, any ideas?

Hi,
Just to be sure: is the actual question how to measure the background noise level in any audio file (with Praat or Audacity) or is this more about batch processing of segments of a big(ger) audio file?

Hello Han, I have 200 audio files of two-minute (minimum) spontaneous speech. I need to get background noise level for each of these audios divided also in 5 slots with Elan. Actually, I have discovered the “clip selection in Praat” option of Elan since my previous post. As I had already annotated the speech of each participant with Elan; at the moment, I select the first eligibile speech pause (400-600msec) in each slot, and by using this clip selection fonction, get their mean intensity with Praat. But I wonder if this is the best way to get background noise during the conversations, if not, is there any other better way to to this? Hope that my explanation is clear enough. Thank you.

Hello Alice, your approach might be the best way to do this. At least, so far I didn’t hear of a better, ‘automatic’ way of calculating the background noise level.
You could probably use the ‘Open selection in Praat’ option from ELAN instead of clipping (but maybe that is what you are doing already).
