I’ve just taken a few days off, and am back in the office and came to find ELAN has stopped working. Whether I open an existing file or attempt to start a new project, ELAN gets stuck initializing. I am running Windows 10, ELAN 4.9.4. I did try updating to the new version, and it didn’t help, so I uninstalled and then went back to 4.9.4. Any advice? Thanks!
Resolved this thanks to an earlier comment from VG, copied below:

Found this (rather old) thread when I looked for solutions on ELAN suddenly initializing forever. I thought I’d share what “fixed” the problem for me, in case anyone else is experiencing the same.
-
What happened in my case *
(using Win10 64b)
I had been using ELAN just fine the day before, and suddenly it wouldn’t open the same files. It just froze, saying “initializing…” not responding at all anymore. -
What fixed it *
The company’s computer doesn’t have any speakers, so I am using headphones. I hadn’t plugged them in yet, when the error occurred.
When I plugged the headphones in, ELAN worked again.
-> SOLUTION: Make sure you have an audio output (speaker, headphone, integrated in your display, whatever) plugged in somewhere. -
What (probably) caused it *
I found this solution when I tried playing some audio in my browser. Instead of just being played without speakers anyway I received an error. So I think it may be something in the way Win10 handles audio in general.
Hope this can help others too.
