I am following ELAR’s protocol for ELAN-FLEx-ELAN interfacing, where I export my text from ELAN, gloss it in FLEx, then re-export the text into ELAN. When I do this, however, the final ELAN no longer contains a phrasal tier–only the word tier and its glosses. In principle, I could merge back the phrase tier from the pre-FLEx file, but sometimes I edit as I go in FLEx, catching inconsistencies, typos, and so forth. What I’m wondering is whether there is a way to either:

a) Export the whole phrase from FLEx back into ELAN, or
b) Create a new parent tier and merge the word tier, which would essentially be the opposite of Tokenize Tier (used to create the word tier in the first place).

Thanks!

It should be possible to get a phrasal tier back by using the function Tier->Copy Tier… I don’t know the details of the ELAR protocol from the top of my head, but this should work, in principle:
– go to Tier->Copy Tier…
– select the word tier in the first step, leave other options unchecked
– in the next step select the parent tier, the same as the parent tier of the words tier
– in the next step, the select Tier Type step, select the type labeled “phrase-item” if it exists. If not create it with the Stereotype “Symbolic Association”.
– click Finish and then rename the new tier (which now has a “-cp” suffix)
