"Play selection" not working, skips to end of file - Windows 10

Hi,

I know some others have had similar issues to this before, but I have read through the previous posts and not found anything that has been able to help me so far. I am trying to play .mp4 files in ELAN, I have not had issues with this before but I just got a new desktop (windows 10) at home (my work computer - PC and laptop - Mac have not had issues with this previously). Initially I could not play the files at all, kept getting error messages related to the video player but I installed the K-Lite Codec Pack and that seemed to fix the problem. However, even though I can now play the files, if I try to use “play selection” function now, it skips straight to the end of the file after playing the selection. I think it’s using the JDS player. I’ve uninstalled and re-installed ELAN 3 or so times and and also restarted my computer, but with no luck. Does anyone have any idea what I could do to fix this, it’s making annotation much more difficult.

Normally .mp4 on Windows are played by a player called JMMFPlayer. The question is why that one doesn’t work on your PC. It might be the same issue as the one mentioned in this post. If you go to View->View Log… there might be somewhere a line containing something like this (after opening an mp4):
“…MMFPlayer.dll: Can’t find dependent libraries”

So far we haven’t found out why this error occurs on some (Windows 10) machines and not on others. We’re working on a 64-bit version of ELAN (and of the MMFPlayer.dll) with a newer version of Java which hopefully doesn’t have this problem.

The play selection problem in combination with K-Lite Pack, I think we cannot resolve.

Thanks for your response. Yes, I did receive a number of error messages that included something similar to that when I was still unable to open mp4s.

Earlier today after posting I went back again through some older posts and tried again with the audio .wav file as the master file rather than the mp4, and that seems to have resolved the issue with “play selection” I was having. Not sure that it will continue to work without any issues, but I’m pleased that it seems to have resolved it for now.
