Problem with existing tiers in Elan 5.6-FX

I am not able to edit (create new segments) in a dependent tier from transcription mode. It does however work in annotation mode.

The tier in question is “symbolic association” and uses a controlled vocabulary.

The problem pertains even if I create a new linguistic type and even if I create a new dependent tier. The problem also pertains across different files.

I am working on a Mac (OS 10.14.5 Mojave).

Also, for some of the mother tiers, I get the following warning when I try to make the dependent tiers visible in annotation mode, when the order is sorted by hierarchy:

“The selected tier ‘[tier name]’ cannot be displayed in the current sort mode – Sort by Hierarchy.
[ ] Force display of the selected tier(s) that cannot be displayed
(this will result in setting all the parent tiers of the non displayable tier(s) to visible)”

Concerning the first issue and just to be sure: is the “Create missing annotations” checkbox ticked in the Settings panel? Creation of new annotations in that mode is optional.

It is difficult to say anything about the second issue. Are you sure that the message is wrong, are none of the ancestor tiers of the tier you want to make visible set to ‘hidden’ or ‘invisible’? This concerns all tiers between the selected tier and its top level, independent parent tier.

You were right: that checkbox was not ticked. I was not aware of that setting.

I thought I was quite sure, and it seems to work now. Now with transcription mode working, that is of lesser importance to me anyway.

Thanks!
