problem with importing video file into ELAN

I have a problem with importing mpg file into ELAN. The video is taken by Sony Handycam DCR-SR80 60GB Hard Drive Digital Camcorder. The specs for this model says that the video capture format is MPEG-2. When I import the video into my PC laptop, it creates two separate files for each video clip: one has extension .mpg and the other .modd. When I try to open these video clips in ELAN, the only file that ELAN recognizes is .mpg, so I can see the video, but not .modd, so i cannot hear it. I guess the .modd file is a corresponding sound file. I don’t know how to solve this problem. I really hope it’s something simple Should I look for ways to convert this mysterious .modd file into something recognizable like .wav or .mp3? Or should i install mpeg-2 codec and see if it works. By the way, both Windows Media Player and QuickTime Player on my laptop refuse to play any of those video clips. hoping, elain

If both Windows Media Player and Quick Time Player refuse to play the files there is either something wrong with the files or you need indeed to install a codec (for mpeg-2 files you always need to have a mpeg-2 codec installed).
Are you sure the .modd contains the audio? You can link .modd files or any other media file in ELAN by selecting “All Files” in the “Files of Type” box in ELAN’s “New” dialog, by the way. But if the file cannot be played by WMP or QT it’ll not play in ELAN.

So, you could either start with installing an mpeg-2 codec (didn’t the camera come with necessary software?) or you’ll have to convert the media files to another format.

Can you please tell me if you resolved your problem? I have the same camera and same issues and am going nuts! I did on-line sony help and they act like I’m crazy. I’d love any advice. Note that my videos do play in Sony Picture Browser, but nothing else. Thanks - Tracy
