When I tried to import tab-delimited transcription files into ELAN 5.4 (in macOS Sierra Version 10.12.6), the files always open in their own windows, separate from the window with the media file (.wav in my case). The has also happened to tab-delimited files that I converted from Praat Textgrid with ELAN (using the Export As function). My colleagues (who also use Mac) have experienced the same issue. Has anyone encountered this issue and any tips on how to resolve this? Much appreciated.
The import of tab-delimited text still always creates a new document in a new window. This is an item on the list of things to do: import directly into the current open document. This requires some extra programming (tier name uniqueness testing, undo/redo etc.).
If, in your case, the document you want to import into only has a wav file linked and nothing else, you could add the wav file to the imported file via Edit Linked Files. If there are already annotations or a set of defined tiers, you can use File->Merge Transcriptions… to add the imported document to your existing document. This is a bit of a hassle and a known issue.
