Jana Bressem

For quite some time I have had problems creating video files (in particular avi) that would work with ELAN. Now the problem seems to be solved and would like to let you know just in case you encouter similiar problems. (I also would like to thank all the list members who helped me to get the problem solved. Thanks a lot).

As has been suggested to me on the ELAN list, the problem with video files lies in the bitrate not the video format itself. We’ve played around with different bitrates for quite some time and now found out that 4000-5000kbps is a good bitrate for ELAN to work with. ELAN then has no problems playing selections properly or going frame by frame. Furthermore, using this bitrate you can create a vast range of video formats ELAN can handle. We’re using avi because it produces the best image quality. But other files worked as well. (At least when we tested it.) So, changing the bitrate accordingly solved our problems.
The last thing I would like to say is that we’ve come across a good video editor which we have been using ever since (AVS video editor). I don’t want to advertise this software here, but after testing quite a few I have to say that this is the best I’ve ever been using.

I hope this thread is of any use to you.

Best regards
Jana
