Windows 7: No player could be created for...

I am suddenly receiving the error message, No player could be created for [my file].mov
quicktime/QTexception
Could not create any media player for file:///[my file].mov
Cannot play back the file. The format is not supported.
quicktime QTexception
Could not realize the jmf player

Last week I could open videos in Elan fine; then I downloaded QT over the weekend and now no movies work. I uninstalled QT and they still don’t work. Help!

That’s strange. So before you installed QT you were able to play .mov in ELAN; maybe you had or have installed a codec for DirectShow? I assume you don’t know what sort of player you actually had in ELAN when it still worked, before installing QuickTime?
Based on the error message it seems your .mov file cannot be played by QuickTime (format not supported). Could that be the case? Did you try to play the file in QT Player outside of ELAN?
And do you have other types of media files as well or only .mov files?

Hmm…what is a “codec for DirectShow” and how would I find it if I had it? I assume I was playing through RealPlayer, but I’m not sure. I can play the file in QT outside of Elan. And I’ve only used .mov files as they were the ones assigned for class…

You could think of codecs as a kind of plugins for Windows Media Player. You have to install them separately, deliberately, so if you don’t know if you have a codec for .mov installed you probably don’t have one.

I’m trying to understand how installing QT could result in movies not working in ELAN anymore that did play before. Normally if you want to use QT player as a player in ELAN, you have to install QT first and then ELAN, in that order. The ELAN installer tries to detect if and where QT is installed and stores the location of libraries. In the ELAN folder a file is then created “java_elan.policy” containing the path to a zip file. Do you have that file?
I would expect a different error message if the setup is not correct.
Are there additional messages in the log (View->View Log…) after you try to open a file and are confronted with that message that you posted before?

Hi eireen and Han!

The same problem occurred to me out of nowhere (no Elan update, no QT update) and the ordinary (de- and re-installing Elan and QT) didn’t help). I get the same error message.
When I try to view the log files, it gives me a “Cannot access the log file. There is no log handler”.
The “java_elan.policy” exists in my Elan folder.
Any ideas? It does not seem to be a coincidence that this problem occurred at the same time for two different users.

Thanks für you help!

I have the same message. I recently moved to a Windows 8.1 machine (so not Win 7) and uninstalling and reinstalling doesn’t help.

forgot to mention: I’m on win 7.

Hi there! I justhad the exact same message as eireen. I’m on Windows 7, havent’ updated QT, but just updated ELAN. I also tried an .avi file, but that didn’t give me the video track, only the sound.

I had the same issue on Windows 7 64bits when I updated QT. I had to reinstall a previous version of QT 7.6 to make it work.
So the same .mov file worked outside of Elan with QT, but only with previous version of QT in Elan.

Ok, it seems that in some cases the sudden failure can be linked to an update of Quick Time, in other cases not.
It would be good to know the QuickTime version of everybody facing this problem. And it would be good to know whether there is a file “QTJava.zip” somewhere in the install folder of Quick Time.

On my Win 7 with QuickTime player 7.7.2 it still works in ELAN. I’ll update to the latest version of QT to see what happens.

Well, after an update of my system to QT 7.7.5, QT doesn’t work in ELAN anymore…. The file QTJava.zip is no longer there. This is something to further investigate.

I’m running Quicktime 7.7.5 under Windows 8.1, and there’s no QTJava.anything in the folder.

Reverting to QT 7.6 does seem to solve the problem for me.

According to the Read Me file of QuickTime 7.7.5, a few so called Legacy Features are no longer installed by default. And these features are removed if you update an existing QuickTime installation to 7.7.5. QuickTime for Java is one of these Legacy Features and this feature is necessary for ELAN to be able to play QuickTime files.

The installer of QT 7.7.5 has a “Custom” mode in which one can select QT for Java as one of the components to install. If 7.7.5 is already installed, e.g. via the Update feature of QT Player, the installer has a Modify option, which allows to install the Legacy Features separately after installation of or update to 7.7.5.
The installer can be downloaded from Apple’s QuickTime website.

Thanks Han. It’s working again

Hi Han! Thanks a lot for this - mine works too, now!

As usual, super support, thanks Han!

Hi! I have the same error but regarding my .wav file. To annotate I use Handbrake to make a light .mp4 with my heavy AVCHD video file and Avidemux to extract the .wav. Then I open both on ELAN and start annotating. This used to work fine but a few days ago I start receiving this error. I read this forum and installed the QTplayer with java files (I didn’t have it previously and everything worked fine), then I reinstalled ELAN but nothing changed. One strange thing is that QT can’t open this .wav from Avidemux but VLC or WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER can do it. Do you know what could be the problem? Thanks a lot and sorry about my english!

QT shouldn’t be necessary for working with .wav files.
After the error message do you see the waveform, or is that gone as well? There might be something special about the .wav (encoding, compression)? Maybe there is an error message in the log (View->View Log…) after you see the error window?
-Han

Hi Han! no, after the error I can only see the video without the waveform. In “View Log” it says: “Cannot accesss the log file: There is no log handler”. I think the .wav is fine, I extracted it from a AVCHD video file using Avidemux.
