How can I use ELAN to calculate the number of words in a particular tier ?
There are several options you can explore. There is e.g. an option to export a list of words, including a word count (Export Multiple Files as->List of Words/List of Annotations).
But in your case it might be easier to (temporarily?) create a tier containing words/tokens by means of Tier->Tokenize Tier (with the particular tier as input). You can then go to View->Annotation Statistics to see an overview of the number of annotations on both gesture tiers and “word” tiers. Calculating the gestures/words ratio should be straightforward then.
